Your guide to the 2022 Frankenmuth Dog Bowl

FRANKENMUTH, MI — The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl returns to Michigan’s Little Bavaria for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29.

The event touted as the world’s largest Olympic-style festival for dogs will feature hundreds of dogs competing in annual events including DockDogs and Disc Dogs of Michigan competitions, border collie sheep herding demonstrations, a pet parade and costume contest, trick competitions and doggie fun run races.

Event organizers expect more than 100,000 visitors to attend this free festival, which takes place at Frankenmuth River Place Shops, 925 S. Main St. Dogs are welcome but must be on a six-foot leash.

While admission to the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is free, some events, such as the annual Canine Cruise on the Cass River, require a registration fee.

The International Dockdogs Competition takes place from 8 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday in the gravel parking lot near the River by the covered bridge. A Pet Parade takes place Saturday afternoon; participating dogs and their owners can line up at 12:45 pm Saturday in the South parking lot near the River Place Shops marquee. The 25-Yard Small Doggie Fun Run Race takes place at 3 pm Saturday at the River Place Shops field. Wiener Dog Races take place at 5 pm Saturday and Sunday at the River Place Shops field. And the Dog Breeds of the World Show takes place at 1 pm Sunday on the Festival Platz Stage.

“Our events team has worked very hard to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all of our guests, whether they are humans or canines,” Michael Zehnder, owner of Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Inc., which owns and operates River Place Shops, said in a statement. “We are looking forward to a doggone fun weekend and the return of Bavarian Inn’s signature Memorial Day weekend festivities.”

Also happening Memorial Day weekend is Balloons Over Bavarian Inn in which 25 hot air balloon pilots from across the country will take to the skies for morning and evening competitions and return to River Place Shops for nightly balloon glows throughout the weekend.

Visitors can see the hot air balloons light up and interact with pilots and their crews during the Balloon Glow Village event from 9 pm to 10 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The 2022 Frankenmuth Dog Bowl will conclude with a Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth fireworks show at 9:45 pm Sunday. The fireworks can be viewed from the large field East of River Place Shops and are visible across town.
