I know, I know. We talk a whole lot about the housing situation here in Bozeman. From the cost to how hard it is to find a place, we’re all familiar with the stories and the current situation here in town.
However what if you need a place to live here in Bozeman AND you have a pet?
It looks like you just might be out of luck. One of the things that I love most about Bozeman is that it’s a dog-crazy town. Everywhere you go from the trails to downtown, you will see someone with a dog. If you’re a dog lover like me, that’s a good thing. But, what if you’re a dog owner and you are looking for a place to rent?
Yea, that could be a big problem.
Some folks on a local Reddit page are lifelong Montanans and are dealing with what so many renters are dealing with here in Bozeman and around Montana. Landlords are hiking up the rent in large amounts. For many, they simply can’t afford to pay the additional money, plus, when you hear stories about rent being raised 2 to 3 hundred dollars a month, you understand why.
Hence the case with our friends on Reddit. The problem is, they have a pet. While there are a few places around town that will accept pets, you’re certainly going to pay a price for it. According to the post, our friend has been looking and can’t seem to find anything under 1800 a month that will accept pets.
So what does a person do?
Listen, I understand. I have two dogs and they mean the world to me. In fact, I would say that I like my dogs more than I like the people in my life (with the exception of my wife, of course). I couldn’t imagine being put in a situation where I would have to decide whether I would have to give them up or not. I simply don’t think I could do it.
My wife and I were lucky when we found a place here in town that accepted pets, and for the record, we pay a hefty price for rent. However, what if you can’t afford the hefty rent? What do you do?
It seems to me that this is a problem that requires a solution. In a world that continues to make accommodations for everyone and everything under the sun, you would think we could figure this pet thing out, right?
I mean, think about this.
Pets make people happy. Happy people tend to be more positive, productive, and responsible. Couldn’t you come to the conclusion that people with pets might be more responsible than people without them? Think about it.
